Brugge Look to Build Lead Over Kiev

The Champions League qualifying rounds continue this week and we have several fixtures to look forward to on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday 6th August one of the standout games is between Club Brugge and Dynamo Kiev at the Jan Breydelstadion and this match is in the League Path of the draw.

That means neither of these teams won their domestic league last season but Club Brugge did finish second in the Championship playoff, 2 points behind the winners to enter the Champions League at the third qualifying round.

They have made a good start to their domestic league campaign this season, winning both matches. Club Brugge started with a 3-1 win at Waasland-Beveren last weekend and followed that up with an impressive 6-0 demolition at home of Sint-Truiden on Friday.

The match being played on Friday has given them a little more time to prepare for this game which is a good thing considering their Champions League record. Trends show Club Brugge have won one of their last sixteen Champions League matches. However, they are unbeaten in their last four, including a win over Monaco away from home and draws with Monaco at home, Borussia Dortmund away and Atletico Madrid at home, all of which were played in 2018.

Club Brugge have drawn three of their last four home Champions League games and both teams have scored in three of the last six.

Dynamo Kiev had to make do with second place behind Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukrainian Premier League last season. They finished 11 points adrift of the leaders but have made a strong start to this season.  Dynamo Kiev have a 100% record, defeating Karpaty 2-0 and Lviv 3-0, both away from home.

They also defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in the Super Cup at the beginning of the season, which was a good result.

Dynamo Kiev lost out in the Champions League Playoffs last season, going down to eventual semi-finalists, Ajax. They have won three, drawn three and lost two of their last eight Champions League games. Away from home, Dynamo Kiev have failed to win in their last seven attempts. There have been four draws and three defeats.

Both teams have scored in each of their last two away Champions League matches and Dynamo Kiev have conceded 6 goals in their last three on the road.

Team news and Club Brugge have signed goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Liverpool but it remains to be seen if he will play. David Okereke is expected to play up-front having scored on the weekend but there are doubts over the fitness of Jordi Vanlerberghe.

Dynamo Kiev travel with an almost fully fit squad. Uruguayan Carlos De Pena is expected to start in midfield with Artem Besedin playing up-front.

Both teams have made a good, goal scoring start to their domestic season and that means we could see them both score in this game. However, Club Brugge are strong at home could get a narrow win.
