Sporting CP and Marseille go head-to-head on Wednesday night in Group D of the Champions League as the home team looks to maintain their position at the top of the group.
The Portuguese outfit has been inconsistent of late all around, as a weekend 2-1 win over Santa Clara means that Sporting have won two and lost two of their previous four matches in all competitions.
However, Ruben Amorim’s team currently sit top of Group D, having won two of their previous three matches in the Champions League. Sporting opened their campaign with wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham before losing 4-1 in Marseille.
Before the current campaign, Sporting had a recent mixed record in the Champions League, as illustrated by the fact that they have won just two of their last six games in the competition.
Sporting does have a decent recent home record in the Champions League, though, as they have won three of their previous four games in the competition on home soil.
OM’s inconsistent recent form continued last time out, as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Ajaccio. The defeat means that Marseille has now won just two of their previous five games in all competitions. However, the loss ended a short two-game winning run for OM.
Marseille currently sits bottom of the group after claiming just three points from as many games in Group D.
However, the group is wide open and if the French team record a win in Lisbon, then they will move level on points with their hosts in the table.
The victory in the reverse fixture ended a three-game losing streak for Marseille in European football’s elite competition.
