Swedish hosts, Malmo, will no doubt be looking to gain a 1st leg advantage on Wednesday evening when they play host to Latvian outfit, Riga, when the two teams meet at the Malmo Stadion in this 1st leg of this 1st qualifying round of the Champions League.

Malmo currently occupy 2nd place in the Swedish Allsvenskan and level on 22 points apiece with leaders, Djurgarden, but the hosts have produced some inconsistent displays in recent times following two wins but three defeats in their last five matches overall.

Victories over Elfsborg and Koge have been overshadowed by defeats to Kalmar, Midtjylland and Norrkoping, although it should be noted that the first four results were in club friendlies.

With the national team bowing out of Euro 2020, the domestic top flight season has recently resumed and one thing that has been consistent so far this season is the prospect of goals where Malmo are concerned.

The hosts have been involved in a total of 36 goals in 10 matches to date while 10 of their last 15 matches at home have resulted in over 2.5 goals.

Riga also occupy 2nd place in their respective domestic Virsliga just two points behind the current league leaders, Rigas, but they’ll head into this 1st leg encounter against Malmo on the back of a 1-0 defeat away at Liepaja.

Riga have lost just two of their last 10 matches overall though and goals have also been evident with six of these 10 games also resulting in over 2.5 goals and includes a crushing 7-0 away win at Noah Jurmala on the domestic front.

Indeed, 10 of Riga’s last 15 matches in all competitions have seen three goals or more scored and this is certainly no suprise, especially in the Virsliga as Riga have been involved in a total of 51 goals in their 16 league matches to date and they’re also the leading goalscorers in the division away from home as well.

With Malmo possessing the likes of striker, Colak (5 goals) along with midfielders Rieks (3 goals) and Berget(2 goals), while Riga’s attacking personnel include forwards Saisolo (7 goals) and Leo (3 goals), there’s every chance we could see a few goals unfold at the Malmo Stadion on Tuesday night, with perhaps Malmo coming out on top.
