The European season 2019/20 is now completed, as Bayern Munich recorded a 1-0 win over big-spending French giants PSG in Lisbon on Sunday night to win their sixth European Cup in its various guises.

Former PSG youngster Kingsley Coman scored the only goal of the game, heading home from a superb Joshua Kimmich cross in the second half.

The final was expected to be high-scoring, but despite the scoreline, the game had plenty of talking points. The performance of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was one of them, as the German number one produced saves from Neymar and Kylian Mbappe among others.

Bayern had their chances and controlled much of the possession. However, a sturdy defensive display, including PSG’s attacking players such as Mbappe tracking back, helped Thomas Tuchel’s team to limit the Bavarian giants to one goal.

Bayern’s forward players, Thomas Muller Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry were kept relatively quiet by the PSG back-four and defensive midfielder Marquinhos, who himself is a centre-back by trade. Maybe the defensive display took something away from their efforts at the other end of the pitch.

The Bayern attack had managed to score at least two goals in their previous ten games heading into the final, having won all ten matches. Therefore, it was no small feat that PSG restricted the Germans to just one goal.

They may have just shaded the final, but overall in this seasons Champions League Hansi Flick’s team have been the best team in the competition. Some teams win trophies by having incredible luck or scrape past teams.

However, Bayern have been impressive and convincing throughout this season’s competition, even before the appointment of Flick as head coach. The Bavarian outfit has beaten every team in front of them, handsomely in most cases, and deserve to be European champions.
