Ajax welcome Atalanta to the Johan Cruyff Arena on Wednesday, with the winner guaranteed a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Atalanta currently sit second in Group D – one point ahead of third-place Ajax. Still, a draw would be enough to see the Italian side progress, with bottom-club Midtjylland on just one point.

Ajax have won two of their five Champions League games this season, drawing one and losing the other two.

The Dutch side have suffered two defeats to Liverpool, but back-to-back victories over Midtjylland put them in a strong position to reach the knockout stages.

Ajax head into Wednesday’s game on the back of just their second defeat in 11 domestic matches this term.

Erik ten Hag’s men have scored a whopping 43 goals while conceding just seven on their way to opening up a two-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie.

It is also worth pointing out that Ajax have scored over 1.5 goals in ten of their previous 15 Champions League games.

Meanwhile, Atalanta thrashed Midtjylland 4-0 on Matchday 1, before suffering a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool.

The Italians got their revenge over Jurgen Klopp’s side on Matchday 4, but they were frustrated by Midtjylland last week.

Despite enjoying 68% possession and racking up 19 shots (eight on target), Atalanta were forced to a settle for a 1-1 draw.

Things haven’t been going too well for Gian Pierro Gasperini’s men in Serie A, either. Indeed, they find themselves ninth the table – 12 points behind frontrunners AC Milan.

La Dea are on a three-game winless streak in the Italian top-flight, losing 2-0 to Verona in their previous domestic outing.

Head-to-head: These two sides have only faced each other once before, with an exciting 2-2 draw coming in the reverse fixture on Matchday 2.

Team news: Ajax will be without Mohammed Kudus for Wednesday’s clash, while David Neres and Noussair Mazraouri are also injury doubts.

Atalanta could be without as many as five first-team players this week, although Robin Gosens could return following a spell on the sidelines due to coronavirus.

As we know, the two teams played out a thrilling 2-2 draw back in October. A similar scoreline is expected this time around.

Forebet predicts that both sides will score over 1.5 goals on Wednesday, with a draw looking like the most probable result.
