The Champions League 1st leg ties of the play-offs stage continue on Wednesday night and features the clash between Swiss hosts, Young Boys, and Hungarian visitors, Ferencvaros, when the two teams meet at the Stadion Wankdorf in Bern.

Overall results have been encouraging for Young Boys in recent times as the hosts have suffered just the one defeat from their last 10 matches in all competitions and they’ve also progressed through the earlier qualifying rounds of the Champions League as well.

Young Boys registered a 3-2 win on aggregate against Slovakian outfit, Slovan Bratislava, before recording a 4-2 aggregate victory over Romanian side, CFR Cluj, to reach the play-offs stage in the competition.

On the domestic front, Young Boys have also registered wins against Luzern 4-3 away from home and were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Grasshoppers.

Although they lost 1-0 away at Sion, Wednesday’s hosts quickly bounced back with wins against CFR Cluj and Littau, the latter being a 4-1 romp on the road in the Schweizer Pokal.

Ferencvaros have also progressed through the early qualifying rounds of the Champions League but their journey to these play-offs has been a longer one than that of their hosts.

A resounding 6-1 win on aggregate over Kosovan club, Prishtina, started the ball rolling for the Hungarian outfit and they followed that up with another convincing display against Lithuanian outfit, Zalgiris, with a 5-1 win on aggregate.

However, in the 3rd qualifying round, Ferencvaros were made to desperately hold onto a 2-0 1st leg lead in the return leg away at Czech Republic club, Slavia Prague, but although they lost the 2nd leg 1-0, it was enough to send Ferencvaros through to this play-off stage.

That defeat in Prague ended a previously impressive run of 17 matches without defeat on the road in all competitions for Ferencvaros, but although they’ve won five of their last six ties in this competition overall, results away from home have been less convincing.

Ferencvaros have managed to win just two of their last seven ties on the road in the Champions League which were against relative minnows, Prishtina and Zalgiris, but four defeats within this sequence suggests this could be a tough 1st leg on Wednesday night in Bern for Ferencvaros.
