Roma will be looking to build a healthy first-leg lead when they welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to Stadio Olimpico in the Europa League Round of 16 on Thursday.

The two sides have generally faced each other in the Champions League over the past few years, most recently in 2018.

Roma finished three points clear at the top of Group A earlier in the campaign, losing just one of their six group games.

In the Round of 32, Roma crushed Braga 5-1 on aggregate, winning 2-0 away from home before claiming a 3-1 home victory.

Despite dominating in the Europa League, it’s fair to say that Roma have endured an inconsistent season when it comes to the Serie A.

Roma have recorded 15 wins, five draws and six defeats in the Italian top-flight, leaving them just outside the top four.

It is worth noting that Roma are unbeaten in their last eight Europa League games on home soil, winning by over 1.5 goals in each of their previous three.

On the flip side, Shakhtar Donetsk began the season in the Champions League and even managed to beat Real Madrid twice.

But despite beating Los Blancos both home and away, the Ukrainian side finished third in Group B – level on eight points with second-place Borussia Monchengladbach.

Shakhtar claimed a 3-0 aggregate win over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Round of 32, claiming a 2-0 away win and a 1-0 home win.

Despite losing just one of their 17 league games this season, Shakhtar find themselves second in the Ukrainian Premier League.

Ten wins, six draws and one loss mean that Shakhtar are four points behind high-flying Dynamo Kiev, although they are still on course to challenge for the title.

Head-to-head: Shakhtar have won four of their last five meetings with Roma, picking up three home victories and one away win in that time.

However, Roma beat Shakhtar in their most recent game back in 2018, securing a 1-0 win at Stadio Olimpico.

Team news: Roma will be without Nicolo Zaniolo, Jordan Veretout, Roger Ibanez and Edin Dzeko through injury on Thursday.

On the other hand, Shakhtar have two notable absentees at the moment, with Maksym Malyshev and Taras Stepanenko currently sidelined.

Shakhtar have enjoyed plenty of success against Roma in recent times, but the Italian side are expected to get the better of the Ukrainian team this time around.

Forebet predicts that Roma will net over 2.5 goals on their way to victory on Thursday, although both teams are likely to score.
