Bayer Leverkusen to enhance top-four bid against the Billy Goats

On Wednesday evening, Bayer Leverkusen will look to enhance their chances of a top-four finish in the Bundesliga when they host midtable Koln at the BayArena.

Leverkusen moved into fourth spot at the weekend, despite a rather disappointing 1-1 draw with struggling Schalke. The draw was enough to move Peter Bosz’s team above rivals Monchengladbach by a point, though. With RB Leipzig now five points ahead of the home side, it now seems a straight fight between Bayer and Gladbach for the last Champions League spot.

Unfortunately for the home side, they have hit a rather patchy run of form at a poor time, winning just once in four games in the Bundesliga. A record of just one clean from six league games has not helped Leverkusen’s Champions League bid either.

Bayer Leverkusen have suffered two straight league defeats at the BayArena against Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich, conceding four goals in both defeats. Bosz’s team is usually solid on home soil. In fact, they had won their previous four home league games. Despite the recent defeats, they have still managed to score at least twice in five of their last six home matches in the Bundesliga.

Koln are comfortably in midtable and have all but secured their Bundesliga status for next season. The visitors are seven points clear of the relegation play-off spot with just three league matches remaining.

The Billy Goats are sitting in relative comfort despite an awful recent run of form in the Bundesliga, that has seen the visitors go seven league matches without a victory. Last time out in the top-flight, they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against out of form Union Berlin.

Koln’s recent away form has also been poor, as they have failed to win in three league matches on their travels.
