Wolfsburg welcome Freiburg to the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday afternoon for what could be a decisive game in the battle for a place in next season’s Europa League.
The Wolves currently sit 6th on 45 points, with 8th-place Freiburg four points behind. A win for Wolfsburg would all but secure them European qualification, but a Freiburg victory would blow the race wide open.
Wolfsburg have been wildly inconsistent of late, so it’s difficult to predict what sort of performance we’ll get from the home side this weekend.
Three victories since the restart – including a hugely impressive 4-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen – have come alongside defeats to Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.
A six-game unbeaten run before the campaign was put on hold had lifted Wolfsburg into a promising position, but inconsistency has been their downfall in recent weeks.
It’s fair to say that Freiburg have also been pretty unpredictable since the restart. One win, two draws, and two defeats have left the club stuck in 8th.
Freiburg returned to action with a decent draw against Leipzig before losing to relegation-threatened Werder Bremen.
A 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt followed, but Freiburg’s winless run was extended to four games following defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
However, an impressive victory over high-flying Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend has kept Christian Streich’s side firmly in the hunt for a top-seven finish.
Freiburg are very strong on home soil, but they have struggled on their travels this season. In fact, they have only managed to win five of their previous 32 away games in all competitions.
Furthermore, Freiburg have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their past 13 away matches in all competitions.
Having said that, Freiburg will take confidence from the fact that they are unbeaten in their previous three meetings with Wolfsburg.
Looking at the team news, Ignacio Camacho, Paulo Otavio, and William are all injury doubts for Wolfsburg, although Renato Steffen is expected to return following suspension.
Freiburg are likely to be without centre-back Manuel Gulde due to injury, but Streich has a fully-fit squad apart from that.
Sure, Freiburg have enjoyed the better of the head-to-head record in this fixture recently. But given the current circumstances, Wolfsburg are expected to come away with all three points this time around.

Forebet predicts that Wolfsburg will claim a narrow victory on Saturday. Both teams are likely to score, but the home side should edge it.
