Augsburg host a slumping Koln on Sunday at the Augsburg Arena with both teams desperate for all three points. Augsburg are a mere four points above the relegation playoff place occupied by Fortuna Dusseldorf and need to win to move away from the drop.
Koln are seven points above Fortuna Dusseldorf, but without a win in their last five Bundesliga games has nerves frayed at the Rhein Energie Stadion. Coach Markus Gisdol has got to get his team back to winning ways after suffering back to back losses to Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.
The Goats defence has allowed seven goals in their last two matches with four of those coming on Monday versus RB Leipzig. Koln have their destiny in their own hands. If they can collect points, they will remain in the division.
Another loss could give Fortuna Dusseldorf and Werder Bremen the chance to catch them, however. Augsburg suffered a defeat on matchday 29 ending a two-match unbeaten run. Coach Heiko Herrlich’s team ran into the juggernaut that is Hertha Berlin and fell 2-0 away.
Augsburg have a brilliant record versus Koln in their last 10 matches. The Fuggerstädter have a record 5W-5D-0L versus Koln dating back to 2012. Koln’s historical form does not bode well for a victory on Sunday.
The last two matches between Augsburg and Koln both ended in 1-1 draws. Their fixture from earlier this season saw Augsburg jump out to a first-half lead courtesy of leading scoring Florian Niederlechner. Koln fought back in the second half claiming a draw thanks to an 86th-minute goal from Jhon Cordoba.
The previous fixture saw Augsburg play the entire second half with 10 men after Andre Hahn was sent off in the 44th minute. With both teams in need of wins, Sunday’s game could be a fiery contest.
Augsburg are winless in their last four home games claiming two points from 12. Their last home fixture ended nil-nil versus bottom club Paderborn.
Koln, on the other hand, have claimed 13 points from 42 possible on the road. Their last two matches away from home ended in losses versus Borussia Monchengladbach and Hoffenheim. The Goats have allowed 32 goals away from home.
The two clubs have drawn back to back Bundesliga games against each other with 1-1 scorelines. Sunday’s game should follow that trend as Augsburg and Koln finish in a third consecutive draw in the league.
