Could the 2022-23 season finally be Hertha Berlin’s last in the Bundesliga? After flirting with relegation over the last few seasons, Hertha are again battling against the drop and look likely of going down this campaign.
Hertha will go into Sunday’s match at home against Borussia Monchengladbach in 17th place. The Old Lady is five points from safety and two points off the relegation-playoff place.

Only Hoffenheim picked up fewer points across the last six Bundesliga matches than Hertha Berlin. The Capital club took three points from six games, scoring a meagre four goals and conceding 15 times.
Hertha Berlin have scored the Bundesliga’s second-fewest goals this season with 20. They have also conceded the fifth-most goals with 35 allowed. The Old Lady is showing relegation form and demotion to the Bundesliga 2 looks highly likely.
Borussia Monchengladbach go into the match on Sunday in a respectable ninth place. Gladbach are unbeaten in back-to-back games but remain eight points off the European qualification places.
The Foals took seven points from the last six games in the Bundesliga. They scored 11 goals but conceded nine times. Gladbach’s attack has been good this season with 34 goals scored. Twenty-nine goals have been allowed by the Foals in 19 matches.
Borussia Monchengladbach are on a two-game winning streak versus Hertha. However, both wins came at Borussia Park. The last meeting between these teams in Berlin ended as a Hertha 1-0 win. It was Hertha Berlin’s only victory in their last six games versus Gladbach.
Gladbach coach Daniel Farke will be without Julian Weigl due to suspension. Midfielders Oscar Fraulo is suffering from the flu and Borges Sanches has a tendon injury. Both are expected to miss the game, limiting Farke’s midfield options.
Sandro Schwarz took over the dumpster fire that is Hertha Berlin in the summer. His guidance has not helped turn the club’s fortunes around. A host of players will miss the game through injury, including Marvin Plattenhardt, Peter Pekarik, Kelian Nsona, and Agustin Rogel.
Steven Jovetic may also miss the game following a muscle injury. Schwarz has one of the most difficult jobs in German football. Outside of coaching Bayern Munich, Hertha are the most difficult team to coach.
Hertha may have won this fixture last season, but Gladbach should post a victory this time. The match should see both teams score and over 2.5 goals, as Gladbach win 3-1.
