Atletico Should Ease Past Arenteiro in the Copa del Rey

CD Arenteiro of the Segunda Division B will meet with La Liga side Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey second round this Thursday with the away side set to play out their first competitive game since before the World Cup break.

The form of Atletico Madrid just prior to the World Cup break was far from impressive and it saw the club drop down into fifth in the La Liga table and even head out of the Champions League at the group stages with just one win on the board from six games.

In fact, the club's only win was the victory to secure passage into this game, as Diego Simeone's men won 2-0 away from home against Almazan.

Atletico did manage to beat Ponferradina in a recent friendly just last week, as Carlos Martin scored twice in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Reinildo Mandava and Alberto Moreno Rebanal scored goals too - all of Atletico's goals came in the last 15 minutes of a 4-2 win.

Arenteiro have also not been playing since before the World Cup, when they managed to stun Almeria with a 2-0 win in the Copa del Rey first round. Anton Escobar and Rafael Mella Ferreiro both scored a goal each that day.

There are a bunch of players who will not be available here because of the World Cup.

Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul both played in the final and will not play for a number of weeks, but the likes of the Spanish stars, Koke, Saul, Alvaro Morata and Sergio Reguilon could all play. Joao Felix has also been with the club for a while.

The Belgium players, Axel Witsel and Yannick Carrasco, were knocked out at the group stages and will likely be the first two names on the clean sheet.

Ivo Grbic may play instead of Jan Oblak, but the latter may still play because of a lack of game time in recent weeks. Despite some players not being available, the fact that both sides haven’t played competitively in the cup for some time likely only favours the La Liga side.

This should be a routine victory for Atletico. The club are significantly higher in the Spanish football pyramid and have more than enough power in their locker to end up getting the win and getting through into the next round.
