Liverpool rediscovering their best defensive form bad news for rivals

It seems that Liverpool are cruising to their first English top-flight in three decades.

On Thursday night the Reds comfortably dispatched of Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield to move 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have now won 19 of their 20 top-flight games this season in what is fast becoming a sensational season for the Merseyside team. There seems to be little hope left for the likes of Leicester and Manchester City in the title race.

If there was one chink of light for the Reds rivals it was the fact that Klopp’s side are not as solid in defence as last season.

However, any hope of a defensive collapse has been quickly extinguished by five straight clean sheets in the Premier League for the league leaders. It seems the normal solid defensive service from last season is now back.

Not only are Liverpool not conceding goals their defensive players are also contributing at the other end of the pitch. Full-backs Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were a good source of assists last season. This season has proven no different.

On Thursday night Robertson produced his sixth assist of the Premier League campaign. That means he is now only two behind his teammate Alexander-Arnold, who is still ranked second in the league for assists.

It seems that everything is coming up Liverpool this season. Only reigning champions Manchester City have scored more Premier League goals this season, while the Reds also have the best defensive record in the top-flight, despite that poor run of form at the back earlier in the season.

It would now take a massive collapse in form for Liverpool to throw away the Premier League title. Their rivals don’t even have the hope of the Reds conceding goals anymore, as they have once again become watertight in defence.
