Win over Leverkusen shows Bayern’s domination in the Bundesliga

On Sunday, two of the top teams in the Bundesliga met at the BayArena, as second-place Bayer Leverkusen hosted league leaders and champions Bayern Munich.

There was a sense that Die Werkself could cause the Bavarians problems and that it could be a competitive game.

Instead, it was more of a massacre than a contest, as Julian Nagelsmann’s team hammered Bayer 5-1. Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry both scored braces, with Thomas Muller also getting on the scoresheet.

All five Bayern goals arrived in a blistering period of play in the games first 37 minutes.

The only plus for Gerardo Seoane’s team was that striker Patrik Schick continued his excellent goalscoring form this season by scoring a second half consolation goal.

Of course, Bayern racking up goals in the Bundesliga is nothing new. It is almost the norm now.

However, for the champions to cut through a team so full of confidence and potential just illustrated how dominant the reigning champions are in the Bundesliga.

The fact Bayern have won nine straight top-flight German titles illustrated it, but this was just further evidence of that dominance.

Bayer Leverkusen their exciting young team and head coach Gerardo Seoane will no doubt have learnt plenty from the experience. Maybe they can harness their disappointment into a positive.

Although they are no longer second place, Dortmund has overtaken them, the early signs of Seoane’s reign suggest that this team has the ability to challenge at the top of the table. Maybe the young team lacks the experience to challenge a behemoth like Bayern just yet.

It will take something very special to stop Bayern Munich under Nagelsmann. At the moment it seems highly unlikely that any team in the German top-flight can stop the Bavarians securing their decade of Bundesliga titles.
