Athletic Bilbao to end four-game winless streak against Alaves

Athletic Bilbao go into La Liga matchday 30 in desperate need of ending a four-game winless streak. The Lions sit 10th in the La Liga standings and are 10 points off of the Europa League places.

Marcelino’s team are unlikely to close that gap with the top six. The good news for the Lions’ manager is that they are 12 points ahead of the relegation zone going into the weekend.

Alaves are rock bottom of La Liga and facing relegation unless they turn their form around. They have lost back-to-back games in the division.

Just three points separate Alaves from the relegation zone escape. A poor goal difference will keep Alaves in the bottom three even with a victory, however.

Manager Abelardo’s team defeated Athletic Bilbao at home earlier this season. Athletic Bilbao’s away record is abysmal. They should play much better at home this weekend. Alaves’ Rodrigo Ely scored the only goal of the reverse fixture in the second half for the win.

Athletic Bilbao’s loss came before Marcelino was hired as manager. The uptick in form the Lions received has slowed since the arrival of the former Valencia boss.

The Lions took seven points from their last 18 on offer. Their last three games in a row all ended in draws. They scored six goals and conceded six in the last six league matches.

Alaves took a mere one point from their last 18 on offer. They were outscored 13 to four over the course of those six games. Alaves also have the worst points total away from home in La Liga with just nine taken from 42 points available.

Athletic Bilbao are unbeaten in five straight games at San Mames. They have been good at home all season long and it is their home form keeping them in midtable. The Lions have taken 24 points from 42 available at San Mames.

Marcelino could be without midfielder Peru Nolaskoain due to an ankle issue. Defenders Yuri Berchiche  and Yeray Alvarez are doubts for the game due to injury. Oier Zarraga is ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

Rodrigo Ely could return for Alaves following a ligament injury. Defender Abdel Abqar is also in line for a return following a foot issue. Facundo Pellistri is a doubt after suffering a hamstring injury.

Alaves’s away record is awful and Athletic Bilbao should take advantage of that poor away form with a win this weekend. The Lions should win to nil in a low-scoring game.
