On Sunday afternoon, Augsburg hosts Bayer Leverkusen at the WWK Arena in the Bundesliga, as the visitors look to boost their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Augsburg have been sucked towards the relegation spots by a woeful recent run of form in the Bundesliga. They do still have a decent buffer, with a four-point gap to the relegation play-off spot, though.
Heiko Herrlich’s team have lost six of their last seven matches in the German top-flight. A big factor in that poor recent run of form has been Augsburg defensive vulnerability, as the home team has conceded at least two goals in five of their last seven league matches.
However, it is at the other end of the pitch that the Bavarians have struggled this season, as only three teams have scored fewer goals this season in the Bundesliga. Unsurprisingly, two of the three are in the bottom three.
The WWK Arena has offered little home comfort for Augsburg of late, as they have won just once in eight home games in the German top-flight.
Bayer Leverkusen have not had the greatest of weeks. Last time out in the Bundesliga, Peter Bosz’s team produced a poor display in a 2-2 home draw with struggling Mainz. Things got worse on Thursday night for Die Werkself, as they went down to a 4-3 defeat to Swiss side Young Boys in the last-32 of the Europa League.
Despite the recent underwhelming results, Bayer are still well placed to get in the lucrative Champions League spots this season.
However, the visitors need to start improving in the league if they are to claim a top-four spot. They head into this clash on the back of just one win in their previous four league outings. Bosz’s team has also lost their last three away games in the Bundesliga.
