Bordeaux will be keen to avoid a fourth defeat on the trot in Ligue 1 when they play host to Marseille on Friday night at their Stade Matmut-Atlantique as the hosts look to climb back up into the top half of the French top flight.

Three defeats on the trot against Lyon, Lille and Brest have resulted in Bordeaux remaining in a mid-table position of 10th place and although they haven’t dropped any deeper down the Ligue 1 table, Bordeaux now find themselves six points adrift of the top five and 5th placed Rennes.

Bordeaux had previously recorded three wins on the trot with victories over Lorient, Nice and Angers but their inconsistent streak has undone them again in recent weeks, while this has certainly been the case on home turf at their Stade Matmut-Atlantique.

Five wins, three draws and four defeats underline Bordeaux’s inability to string together a consistent sequence of results but within their 12 home matches so far, the hosts have kept six clean sheets.

A stellar stretch of results from mid-October through to mid-December saw Marseille pick up six wins on the trot in Ligue 1 and for a time, Andre Villas-Boas’s side looked to be mounting a serious challenge for at least a top three finish, but results have subsequently declined in dramatic fashion.

A disappointing run of just one win amongst their last 10 matches has not only thrown Marseille’s European ambitions out of the window but they also contributed to the sacking of former coach Andre Villas-Boas who was shown the door after remarks made about loan-signing Ntcham.

A 3-1 home win against Montpellier though has been Marseille’s only highlight for some time as the visitors have slumped to six defeats and picked up just three draws during this poor period of results.

Poor results away from home have also seen Marseille fail to win any of their last five matches on their travels following losses at Rennes, Angers and Monaco while being held to draws at Dijon and Lens, so the prospects of an away win here seem unlikely.

Interestingly, four of the previous five meetings between Bordeaux and Marseille at the Stade Matmut-Atlantique have ended in stalemate and this upcoming clash may follow this trend.
