Lille to add to Celtic’s misery in Europa League

Neil Lennon’s job as Celtic manager maybe hanging by a thread. After failing to get his team into the Champions League group stage, the Hoops suffered a thrashing at the hands of AC Milan on Europa League matchday 1.

Now, Celtic head to France to face off with Ligue 1 co-leaders Lille. The French club claimed a 4-1 win on Europa League matchday 1 versus Sparta Prague. Lille’s Yusuf Yazici scored a hat-trick with all three goals coming in a 30-minute time span.

Lille have their sights on progressing to the knockout stage and a win versus Celtic at home can almost put them in the last 32. Les Dogues have not lost this season in all competitions and are nine games unbeaten.

They average 2.00 goals scored per game while conceding 0.44 goals a match. Lille have allowed just four goals in nine games in all competitions. Five of their games this season finished in wins to nil.

Celtic have played 16 games in all competitions. They have scored an incredible 38 goals in all competitions, however, that figure should be taken with a grain of salt. The Hoops have tallied some big scoreline wins against poor Scottish teams.

The Hoops struggled against AC Milan on matchday 1 of the Europa League. They fell 3-1 and allowed AC Milan to score in each half of the game. Celtic are in the midst of a three-game winless streak in all competitions.

They followed up their loss to AC Milan with a 3-3 draw versus Aberdeen. Celtic had to come from 1-0 down at halftime to get the result. Lille also drew at the weekend, coming from behind to get a 1-1 result versus Nice.

The draw keeps Lille on track to potentially win Ligue 1 for the first time since the days of Eden Hazard. Les Dogues need to keep getting points on the domestic front and over time, their European adventures could play havoc with fighting for the league title.

Celtic’s loss to AC Milan on matchday 1 once again showed that the Hoops struggle against good European teams. Thursday night’s Europa League matchday 2 game should end in favour of Lille in a low-scoring game.

Six of Lille’s nine games in all competitions finished with under 2.5 goals scored. Les Dogues have kept five clean sheets and should do it once more against a struggling Celtic.
