Getafe were involved in yet another draw on the weekend in La Liga when they were held to a 0-0 draw away from home at Osasuna which became Getafe’s fifth stalemate in eight matches overall in the Spanish top flight.

However, despite winning just one of these last eight matches overall, Wednesday evening’s hosts, Getafe, still occupy 6th place and the last remaining European spot by way of a Europa League qualifying berth and they hold a valuable three-point cushion above 7th placed Real Sociedad.

Points picked up in draws with Celta Vigo, Espanyol and Eibar at home along with a 2-1 win at their Coliseum Alfonso Pérez over Real Sociedad have made Getafe a hard team to beat in their own backyard, and this is underlined by losing just two of their last 13 matches at home.

Goals have been a little on the light side though as 10 of Getafe’s 17 home matches to date in this season’s La Liga campaign have resulted in under 2.5 goals, which has been helped by Getafe keeping eight clean sheets at home to date too.

Onto Villarreal, and the visitors occupy 5th place and the automatic entry into the Europa League but they do still have a chance of making a top four finish and the more financially lucrative Champions League as they trail 4th placed Sevilla by just a three-point margin.

It’s perhaps a case of ‘stick or twist’ for Villarreal who could go all out for the points here at Getafe, but having already lost eight of their 17 away matches so far this season, the visitors may take a more measured approach against this Getafe outfit who have lost at home on just three occasions.

Villarreal’s useful looking six-match sequence without defeat was ended on the weekend by a rampant Barcelona side on home turf at their Estadio de la Cerámica, which included wins against Celta Vigo, Mallorca, Granada, Valencia and Real Betis, while they bring a three-match winning streak on the road into Wednesday night’s encounter.

The visitors hold a slender one-point lead over their Wednesday night’s hosts though, and this could come into play in this upcoming fixture as Villarreal may just be happy to avoid defeat in this one and take their chances at home against Real Sociedad next week.

Therefore, a low-scoring affair could unfold here.
