The defeat also slightly hampered Montpellier in the chase for a top-four finish in Ligue One and a European spot. However, the home side are still just a point outside the top four in the French top-flight.
Montpellier have built their push for European football next season on a good home record, as the home team has won eight of their last ten league matches at the Stade de la Masson while suffering just one defeat. They have been prolific on home soil of late in Ligue One too, scoring at least twice in four of their last five home matches.
After a mixed start to their Ligue One campaign, Metz are sitting relatively comfortably in 16th place, seven points clear of the relegation play-off spot.
