Despite gaining a point in a 2-2 draw away from home at Millwall in midweek, Wigan Athletic’s overall poor form away from home has seemingly caught up with The Latics as they now find themselves in the relegation zone ahead of this weekend’s action in the Championship.
6 matches without a win in the second tier have dumped Wigan into the bottom three after having lost to Derby County, Swansea City, Brentford and Stoke City and it looks like being a long and tough battle against relegation from here on in for Paul Cook’s side, who will play host to fellow strugglers, Reading, at their DW Stadium this Saturday.
Wigan have still yet to register an away win so far this season as they’ve slumped to 7 defeats from their 10 matches on the road to date.
This has been a contributing factor in their slide into the bottom three, and having lost their last 2 matches on the trot at home, things look bleak for Wigan at the moment.
Despite a solid start at home, which saw Wigan win 4 of their first 6 matches at home, they’ve since been handed back-to-back defeats to Swansea City and Brentford, but the goals (or lack thereof) markets look promising - 5 of Wigan’s 8 home games have resulted in under 2.5 goals.
Onto Reading, and the visitors were also on the losing end of a 1-0 defeat at home to Leeds United during the week and this followed a narrow 1-0 defeat away from home at Brentford last Saturday.
As a consequence, Mark Bowen’s side have dropped down to 18th place and find themselves just 2 points ahead of their Saturday’s hosts, Wigan Athletic, so this encounter takes on even greater importance in what could be dubbed an early relegation clash at the DW Stadium.
Following Bowen’s apparent self-appointment as manager of The Royals, the Berkshire club embarked upon a promising 4-match sequence without defeat which included wins against Preston North End, Millwall and Luton Town, but all of these victories were recorded on home turf at their Madejski Stadium.
