Huge Chance for Hungary to Make Big Step Towards Qualification

Huge Chance for Hungary to Make Big Step Towards Qualification

There are two rounds of 2020 European Championship qualifying games in each group this week.  The second round of games in Group E take place on Monday and there is a massive match in Hungary which could have a big say on which teams qualify for the tournament.

Hungary host Slovakia at the Groupama Arena in Budapest and know if they can win, it leaves them in a very strong position at the top of the group.  A win for Slovakia would see them move level on points with Hungary and keep things open for themselves and the other competing teams in the group.

The hosts did not play in the first round of fixtures during the international break.  They have played four games in the group, winning three and losing one.  The wins have come at home to Croatia and Wales plus away to Azerbaijan.  The defeat was away to Slovakia in the first set of matches in the group.

Hungary did play a friendly match on Thursday night and lost 2-1 at Montenegro.  They will be hoping that does not have much of an impact on this game.  Trends show Hungary have won each of their last five home games, in the UEFA Nations League and European Championship qualifying.

The wins have come over Greece, Estonia, Finland, Croatia and Wales.  They have kept clean sheets in three of their last four home matches, with Croatia being the only team to find the back of the net at the Groupama Arena.

Slovakia suffered a major blow on Friday night as they slumped to a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Croatia.  The hosts were still in the game coming up to half-time and conceded a goal to go in 1-0 down.  This seemed to have a negative impact on their second half display and they conceded again shortly after the interval.  There was no coming back and two more goals in the second half complete a disappointing night.

Slovakia have 6 points on the board, having won two and lost two of their four games. They defeated Hungary at home 2-0, lost 1-0 at Wales, beat Azerbaijan 5-1 away, which was a good result before the heavy defeat to Croatia.

Trends show Slovakia have won just one of their last six away competitive games.  They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eleven competitive matches on the road.

Team news and Hungary are likely to go with the same starting XI from their previous home game against Wales.  That means Adam Szalai up-front with support from Balazs Dzsudzsak and Filip Holender.

Slovakia could make a few changes to the team which lost against Croatia.  Robert Boenik, Luka Haraslin and Michal Duris could all come into the starting XI.

This is match Hungary will be desperate to win.  With the home advantage and good recent record, they should come out on top and could keep a clean sheet in the process.
