Rangers to book Europa League play-off spot

On Thursday night, Scottish giants Rangers have the chance to book their place in the Europa League play-offs, as they host Danish side Midtjylland in the third qualifying round second leg.

Steven Gerrard’s team have one foot in the play-off round already, having recorded a 4-2 win in the first leg in Denmark. It was not just the win that gave the team from Glasgow the edge in the tie, but also the four away goals. It will be very difficult for the visitors to get back into this tie.

Rangers have enjoyed a comfortable Europa League campaign, winning four of their five matches in Europe’s secondary competition. The first leg of this tie saw Gerrard’s team concede their first goal in the Europa League this season. Still, a record of two goals in five matches is not awful.

At the other end of the pitch, the Gers have scored at least two goals in all four of those aforementioned European wins this season.

Rangers have been incredibly difficult to beat at Ibrox in the Europa League. Only PSV Eindhoven have won on Rangers’ soil in 22 games dating back to 2006.

Midtjylland do not have a great recent record in the Europa League, winning just twice in their last seven outings. They have now failed to win in three games in the competitions, suffering two straight defeats in European competition.

Defensive problems have been the main crux of the visitor’s problems in this competition, as they have now conceded at least two goals in all three of those winless games in the Europa League.

Considering Midtjylland’s relatively poor recent record in the competition, it's not surprising that their away record is inconsistent too. The Danish side has been prolific in front of goal on their recent travels in the competition, scoring at least two goals in their last six away matches.
