Then there was one. That’s all that is left between Manchester City and making history, while if they can get the better of Brighton on Sunday, they will be the first team to win back to back Premier League titles since 2009.

Pep Guardiola’s men make the long trip to The AMEX off the back of a monstrous run of successive victories - a streak that was extended to 13 wins on Monday night, when they got the better of Leicester at the Etihad.

Liverpool fans would have also taken a keen interest into that game, while they would have no doubt been hoping that their former manager Brendan Rodgers could do them a huge favour and for nearly 70 minutes this looked to be the case.

Unfortunately for fans across Merseyside and beyond, Vincent Kompany unleashed an Exocet missile from 30 yards and once it crashed past Kasper Schmeichel, it was apparent that City would go into the final day of the season as the league leaders.

The sight of his shot bulging into the back of the net, was an undoubted relief for everyone connected to City and especially as it shaping it up to be a game that would ultimately see the likes of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling frustrated in front of goal.

Where the Goal Decision System has been such a key ally to City this season, it was of no benefit on Monday night and the perfect example of this, was when Aguero’s first half header hit the woodwork and bounced agonisingly on the wrong side of the line.

However, this game also displayed just why this group of players are top of the table and that was because they just don’t know when to lie down, that or they simply will not be allowed to by the man who pulls all the touchline strings.

With the penultimate championship hurdle cleared in the week, it is now left to get the dispose of Brighton and the one thing that will work in their favour, is the fact that the Seagulls have no relegation concerns to deal with.

Teams who are fighting for their lives on the final day, are always a difficult proposition to deal with and you only have to mention Queens Park Rangers and 2012, for any Manchester City fan to break out into a cold sweat.

Of course, Roberto Mancini would eventually see his players snatch the Premier League title away from Manchester United in the most dramatic circumstances of all and the hope for the current club steward, is that he oversees a much more routine capture of English football’s biggest crown.

This title race has been nothing short of enthralling and whoever ends up the winner on Sunday, will be worthy of wearing the mantle of champion. However, it is all set up for City to win back to back titles and although stranger things have happened, there will be no last day drama on the South Coast.
