Colombia and Jamaica set for low-scoring WWC round of 16 clash

Colombia and Jamaica are two of the biggest surprises of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Jamaicans reached the last 16 at the expense of the heavily-favoured Brazilians.

Meanwhile, Colombia’s progression to the round of 16 saw pre-tournament favourite Germany eliminated.

One of the two upstart teams will move on to the quarterfinals of the competition. A win for either team on Tuesday would see the advance to play England or Nigeria in the last eight.

Colombia topped Group H with six points. The Powerpuff Girls finished tied with Morocco on points but advanced due to a better goal difference.

Colombia started the World Cup with a 2-0 win over South Korea followed by a shock 2-1 win over Germany.

A final group stage 1-0 loss to Morocco wasn’t enough to dislodge the team from first in Group H.

Linda Caicedo leads Colombia in goals with two from three matches. Colombia scored four goals in the group stage and conceded just two times.

Jamaica are one of the success stories of the World Cup. Just weeks before the tournament kicked off, the team was crowdfunding money to help them pay for the trip to Australia and New Zealand.

The Jamaican Football Association hasn’t been much help to the team and failed to offer adequate funding. Reaching the round of 16 was unexpected.

Jamaica drew nil-nil with France and Brazil in Group F. Their only win was against Panama, 1-0. Jamaica have some quality players but they struggled to score in the group stage.

Head coach Lorne Donaldson will need the team to play well defensively. Jamaica kept three clean sheets in the group stage.

Colombia and Jamaica met twice previously. The teams split the two matches one win apiece.

In 2018, The teams met in the Central and Caribbean Games and Jamaica won 2-1 at full-time.

One year later, the teams played in the Pan American Games and Colombia claimed a 2-0 victory.

Despite losing 1-0 to Morocco on the final day of Group H, Colombia controlled the game with 60% possession.

They tallied 11 shots to Morocco’s eight. However, Colombia’s defence conceded six shots on target.

Jamaica’s struggles in the final third could help Colombia’s defence. The Reggae Girlz play a defensive 4-1-4-1 formation.

They recorded just three shots and zero on target against Brazil. Jamaica only kept 27% possession.

Jamaica should struggle to get on the ball against Colombia and focus on defending first. It should lead to Colombia getting a goal and holding on to win. Colombia will get the victory with a 2-0 score.
