Jamaica pulled off a shock nil-nil draw against France in Women’s World Cup Group F to start the tournament. The Reggae Girls surprised one of the World Cup favourites, with unwavering defence.

Manager Lorne Donaldson’s team were difficult for France to break down. Jamaica kept just 27% possession during the match.

Jamaica will fancy their chances of a win against Panama on matchday No 2 in Group F.

Panama were thrashed 4-0 against Brazil. The Canal Girls gave up 73% possession to Brazil along with 32 shots.

Jamaica and Panama have played twice previously. Jamaica won one and drew one match against the Canal Girls and are the bookmakers’ favourite to win at full-time.

Jamaica will be without starting striker Khadija Shaw after she was sent off against France. Shaw’s absence will be felt by Jamaica in the final third.

However, her absence against Group F’s weakest team will mean Shaw returns for the final group game against Brazil.

The Reggae Girls recorded six shots against France, with two hitting the target. They tallied a mere 193 passes compared to France’s 472.

If Jamaica can win against Panama, they could reach the knockout stage at the expense of the more highly touted French or Brazilians.

Panama have lost three matches in a row going into matchday No 2 of Group F. The team failed to score in each of those three fixtures. In each of those matches, Panama conceded 4.0 or more goals.

Jamaica are not a high-scoring team and with Shaw suspended, may struggle to get goals – even against a poor defensive team. These teams last met in May 2019, with Jamaica defeating Panama 3-1.

Their only other previous encounter was in 2018 at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship.

The match ended 1-1 at full-time and 2-2 after extra time. Jamaica won the fixture and progressed on penalties.

Panama coach Ignacio Quintana used a 5-4-1 formation in the opening match versus Brazil. The formation was deployed to slow down Brazil with two banks of players.

Unfortunately, Brazil still cut through the Canal Girls. The formation provided little attacking threat.

Jamaica used a 4-4-1-1 formation versus France. The formation stopped the French from cutting through the Reggae Girls, but France did have large swaths of possession and better chances.

Jamaica should post a win over Panama in a close game. The Reggae Girls should win 1-0 and improve their chances of progressing to the round of 16.
