Montpellier Set to Edge Past Lyon in Ligue 1 This Weekend

It’s 10th against 11th in what is arguably the biggest game of the season this weekend for Lyon and Montpellier as both look to get back in the win column after a dismal few weeks have seen both sides rocket down the league table.

While Lyon started the season so well, for Montpellier, in reality, they have never really been considered for a battle inside the Champions League places, but they have still managed to score 21 goals so far in the league - no side outside of the European spots in Ligue 1 have scored more.

However, the club have also still let in an alarming 22 goals from 11 games, meaning they are only narrowly ahead of Auxerre in the race to see who has conceded the fewest goals from those outside of the drop zone.

As well as this, Montpellier have not been able to win a game for many weeks and have dropped out of the top half of the table as a result and will now have a bit of work to do to get back into the top half.

In fact, they have not not won a game since securing all three points in a very narrow win over Strasbourg just before the international break.

What’s more, a loss to strugglers Toulouse would come soon after the international break, with them also losing to Monaco and Lens in the past two games in Ligue one to throw them on a five-game winless run.

This does now mean just Montpellier have put together two just wins since the end of August for and sit as one of the worst teams in the league right now in terms of form.

As for Lyon, their early fight to get themselves into a title race has now suddenly disappeared with the club  now falling to 10th in the table after a promising start at the beginning of the campaign.

In fact, they have now failed to win any of their past six games in Ligue 1 and are now likely to fight for a place in Europe instead.

Lyon lost to Lorient, Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain and Lens in a row throughout September and early October, as they eventually accumulated just one point in a 1-1 draw with Toulouse.

A further loss to Rennes last weekend moved them onto a winless run of six games, with a terrible record of 12 goals conceded in the past six outings, netting just five.

Forebet predicts a win for Montpellier and for the game to see over 2.5 goals.
