Bulgaria and N Macedonia start with stalemate

This week sees the start of another UEFA Nations League campaign and Thursday evening features this upcoming clash in League C Group 4 between Bulgaria and North Macedonia at the Huvepharma Arena, with the hosts keen to get off to a winning start.

The other two nations in Group 4 are Georgia and Gibraltar so Bulgaria will fancy their chances of finishing top of this group and gain promotion up to League B by the end of this campaign.

But first they need to gain a result over a North Macedonian outfit who stunned Italy 1-0 away from home in a recent World Cup qualifier semi-final play-off.

Bulgaria finished in 4th place in their respective Group C in the World Cup qualifiers and were some eight points adrift of Italy who finished runners-up behind the surprise group winners, Switzerland.

Overall, Bulgaria have found victories hard to come by on the international stage as the hosts have managed to collect just three wins out of their last 17 matches in all competitions.

But they have won their last three home games on the trot, having recorded wins against Lithuania, Georgia and Northern Ireland.

North Macedonia finally fell at the last hurdle of their World Cup qualifying campaign, losing out 2-0 away at Portugal but nevertheless, it was a grand effort to reach the final stage which included their impressive 1-0 win away from home in Italy in the play-off semi-finals.

Although North Macedonia finished a significant nine points adrift of Germany in their Group J qualifying group, North Macedonia beat the likes of Romania, Armenia and Iceland into a top two finish and the visitors must be respected in these Nations League tussles.

Since their inception, North Macedonia have lost only two of their 12 Nations League matches to date overall but results away from home continue to be inconsistent.

The visitors have won, drawn and lost in equal measure so far.

However, overall results have seen an improvement on the road for North Macedonia as the visitors have lost just one of their last five outings on their travels.

That being the 2-0 loss at Portugal but they had recorded wins at Liechtenstein, Armenia and Italy beforehand.

To sum up, Bulgaria and North Macedonia look fairly evenly matched so a draw may be on the cards in this Group 4 opener.
