The Portuguese top flight is in action again on Friday evening with hosts and 10th placed side, Boavista, entertaining 6th placed visitors, Vitoria Guimaraes, at the Estádio do Bessa Século XXI, with both teams in need of points for differing reasons.

Boavista sit in the relative comfort of a mid-table position in the Liga Portugal standings where they hold an unassailable 10-point cushion over third from bottom outfit, Moreirense, prior to this Friday evening’s tussle with Vitoria.

Following two recent defeats on the trot to Maritimo and Sporting Lisbon, Boavista managed to record a bounce-back 2-1 win away from home at Moreirense last weekend.

Those three points have helped seal the hosts’ Portuguese top flight status for at least another season, while overall results of late have been reasonable enough.

Boavista have lost just three out of their last 12 matches overall which also includes five draws/ s

So the possibility of another stalemate here on Friday night with Vitoria Guimaraes certainly cannot be ruled out.

The hosts have also lost just twice in their last 10 home games with the draw again being prevalent, stalemates cropping up six times in these last 10 games.

Vitoria Guimaraes have just two matches remaining of this season’s Liga Portugal campaign.

And the visitors know they must win both of these games and need 5th placed Gil Vicente to slip up if they’re to grab the last remaining European spot for next season.

The visitors registered a resounding 4-0 home win over Pacos Ferreira recently and this was followed up with back to back draws with Tondela and Santa Clara, both in 1-1 stalemates, which has helped keep Vitoria Guimaraes in the frame for a possible 5th place finish.

Recent results have also improved for Vitoria too as the visitors have suffered just two defeats out of their last eight matches, losing at home to Sporting Lisbon and Porto but also picking up wins against Famalicao, Maritimo, Moreirense and Pacos Ferreira.

In addition, following a dismal period of six away games without a win (which included five defeats), Wednesday’s visitors, Vitoria Guimaraes, have since pulled their socks up by putting together a three-match unbeaten run on the road.

Wins at Maritimo and Moreirense will give Vitoria a lift here but both sides could cancel each other out in another stalemate.
