Athletic Bilbao will welcome bottom-placed Levante to San Mamés this weekend as the relegation-threatened side look to build on their best period of form shown all season while the home side keep an eye on Europe.

It has been a while since Bilbao have been able to call themselves a competitor in Europe’s cup competitions, but with a current eighth-placed standing, it's not entirely over for this season.

Bilbao are trailing Real Sociedad in the Europa League Conference position of sixth by seven points and Atletico Madrid in fifth by eight points.

In reality, a fight for a place in Europe is a bit unlikely for Bilbao this season, but nevertheless, with a 10th-placed finish last season and a 12th-placed sitting the season prior, for the club to finish in eighth would be their highest league standing for two seasons.

Once again under Marcelino García Toral, the club are still conceding very few goals but scoring a little too. As of now, the Lions have conceded only 25 times in the league, which is a joint-third best in the league, while also scoring just 29, which is the joint-lowest in the bottom half.

Ironically enough though, games have been incredibly high scoring for Bilbao in recent times with them playing out a 3-2 defeat to Mallorca last month, before smashing Real Sociedad 4-0 in what was arguably their result of the season.

Barcelona would hammer them 4-0 last time out in the league though, and it was a reminder to how far the club still has to go to get into Europe.

Valencia would also knock Toral’s men out of the Copa del Rey last time around as Valencia won 1-0 to win the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Levante, however, are in stunning form compared to their own standings and after going months without getting their first win on the board, the club are now unbeaten in their past three games and have moved a little closer to getting out of relegation.

This still remains an unlikely feat though, with Levante trailing Granada by seven points in order to get to safety.

Alessio Lisci managed to beat Atletico back in mid-February 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano, which was easily the upset of the season to date. A commendable 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo would come, before Levante smashed Elche 3-0.

Bilbao rarely concede that many goals, however, and Forebet predicts a win for them here and the game to see over 2.5 goals
