Two sides at either end of the Serie A table meet on Friday as Genoa welcome Inter Milan to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium with the home side sitting 19th in the Italian top flight with Inter second in their attempts at defending their league title.
Simone Inzaghi’s men have hit their biggest roadblock of the season right now and they haven’t welcomed their fans to 2022 with much grace. Just two league wins have come for Inter in 2022 so far as they beat Lazio 2-1 and Venezia 2-1 back in January.
The club have, however, advanced to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia where they face city rivals AC Milan, next week, and they got there by beating Roma 2-0 and Empoli 3-2.
Inter have also won the Supercoppa Italiana recently in stunning fashion when they beat Juventus 2-1 thanks to an Alexis Sanchez winner in the 121st minute.
Also in cup competitions though, Liverpool managed to beat them at the San Siro in the Champions League and they now have a massive fight on their hands to win at Anfield by at least three goals.
However, after losing to Sassuolo 2-0, the Italian champions have now failed to win their past three games and now sit with five goals conceded and just one scored within this time.
Moreover, the club's win over Venezia back on January 22nd remains their only one since then, as they lost a dramatic Milan derby to Milan 2-1 just a few weeks back.
The defeat to Sassuolo was a more damning one though, as it now leaves them two points behind their city rivals and level on points with Napoli, while even Juventus are back within seven points.
As for Genoa, they are down in the relegation spots once more following their run of 23 games without a win in Serie A. Oddly enough, the club have managed to give themselves a fighting chance of staying in Serie A with their incredible 13 draws - the most in the league.
These 13 points plus the extra three from their sole league win over Cagliari have now put Genoa six points adrift of the safe spots, but worse yet, following goalless draws and defeats, they have now scored just three times in 2022.
Despite the recent turmoil, Inter are still the favourites to win the title in the eyes of many, and facing off with a Genoa side that haven’t won in Serie A since September, is the perfect place to return to winning ways.
