Estoril set to boost European hopes against Arouca

On Thursday night, Estoril will look to bounce back to winning ways when they host relegation-threatened Arouca in the Primeira Liga.

On paper, Estoril’s recent league form looks more like that of a team attempting to avoid relegation.

However, Bruno Pinheiro’s team is seventh place in the Portuguese top-flight table and just five points adrift of the European spots, with a game in hand on fifth-place Gil Vicente.

Their recent form of no wins in four league games has rather damaged the home sides chances of a top-five finish this season. To make matters worse, a 3-1 defeat against Vitoria Guimaraes last time out was their third straight league loss.

Estoril will have to improve in defence if they are to finish in the Primeira Liga’s top-five this season, as they have conceded at least two goals in three of their last four league outings.

The home side has also failed to win in six matches on home soil in the Portuguese top-flight. However, four of their last five home matches in the league have produced draws.

Arouca are currently 17th place in the Primeira Liga table but are just two points from safety with a game in hand on the teams directly above them.

Armando Evangelista’s team have been in concerning form of late in the Primeira Liga, as they are winless in six games, having suffered five defeats in the process.

Like their hosts, Arouca have been poor in defence of late, conceding at least two goals in five of their last six outings in the Primeira Liga.

Arouca have failed to win in their last 18 away games in the Portuguese top-flight dating back to 2017 in their previous spell in the Primeira Liga.
