Reims and Metz set for stalemate

Next up is a bottom half clash in the French top flight between 14th placed Reims and second from bottom outfit, Metz, as the two teams meet at the Stade Auguste-Delaune II on Sunday afternoon.

Reims will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in Ligue 1 to four matches this weekend following a 2-0 home win over St Etienne along with back-to-back draws with Marseille 1-1 away from home and a 0-0 draw on the road at Clermont.

Results overall for Reims have been fairly encouraging for the hosts as they’ve suffered just the one defeat out of their last eight matches which has helped them avoid dropping further down the table and closer to the relegation zone.

Victories over Clermont, Lyon and St Etienne should give Reims plenty of confidence ahead of Sunday’s clash with lowly Metz but it should be noted that the hosts have also been held to four draws within this eight-match sequence as well.

Indeed, the draw has featured in nine of Reims’ last 18 home games.

Metz occupy second from bottom in Ligue 1 and one of the relegation places in the domestic top flight after winning just three games throughout what has been a disappointing campaign to date for the visitors.

League wins have been hard to come by for Metz whose only highlights so far this season have been collected against Brest, Nice and Lorient but also includes no fewer than 10 defeats as well.

Metz have therefore been unable to build any sort of momentum due to their inconsistent and poor results in this Ligue 1 campaign and this has so far resulted in Metz occupying the relegation zone while winning twice on the road.

There have been just three draws on the road where Metz have been concerned but given their dicey situation and spate of defeats up to this point, the visitors may be happy to settle for a point apiece here this Sunday afternoon.

In addition, Metz have managed to keep just two clean sheets in their last 12 matches on their travels in the domestic top flight and this may come back to bite them here.

Four of the last seven meetings between Reims and Metz have ended in stalemate and this upcoming encounter may be no exception.
