Despite selling off Romelu Lukaku and several other key players from last season’s title winning team, Inter Milan began the Serie A season in fantastic fashion.
Inter Milan hammered Genoa 4-0 at San Siro with Milan Skriniar, Hakan Calhanoglu, Arturo Vidal, and Edin Dzeko getting on the scoresheet. Dzeko was signed as Lukaku’s direct, cheaper replacement at San Siro. So far, he has played well.
Hellas Verona are seeking a first win against Inter Milan in more than 20 years. The Gialloblu are winless at the Stadio Bentegodi in their last nine games against the Nerazzurri. Last season, Inter Milan claimed a 2-1 win at the Bentegodi against Hellas Verona.
On matchday 1, Hellas Verona lost 3-2 to Sassuolo at home. After going 2-0 down, Hellas Verona scored through Mattia Zaccagni in the 71st minute. They conceded a third goal shortly thereafter before picking up a second goal in stoppage-time as Zaccagni struck home from the penalty spot.
Last season, Inter Milan had Serie A’s second-best away points total. They took 39 from 57 points away from San Siro. The Nerazzurri scored 36 goals and conceded 17 times.
Hellas Verona took just 24 points from 57 at the Bentegodi in 2020-21. They scored 23 goals while conceding 23 times. Like Inter Milan, Hellas Verona are under the leadership of a new coach. Eusebio Di Francesco is now in charge of Hellas Verona as he seeks to resurrect his coaching career.
Di Francesco will be without midfielder Miguel Veloso after he was sent off against Sassuolo in the first half. Other than Veloso being absent due to suspension, Di Francesco should have a fully fit squad to select from.
Simeone Inzaghi has three names on the Inter injury list going into the game. The most significant of those names is Alexis Sanchez, who is suffering from a muscle injury. He could return in time for the match.
It was reported this week that Inter Milan want to get Sanchez and Vidal off their books. The Chilean duo make a significant amount of money. Unfortunately, for Inter Milan, Sanchez and Vidal’s wages make it impossible for other clubs to sign them.
Inter Milan have been brilliant against Hellas Verona over the course of the last 20 years. That brilliance is not about to stop. Inter Milan should claim a second straight win of the Serie A season.
