With the new Belgian Pro League season just around the corner, the 2021 Belgian Super Cup takes place on Saturday.

Club Brugge – the winners of the 2020/21 Pro League title – take on Genk – the winners of the 2020/21 Belgian Cup – at Jan Breydel Stadium.

Club Brugge booked their spot in the Super Cup by winning the top-flight title last season, finishing 16 points clear of second-place Antwerp in the regular-season standings.

Not only were Brugge the top scorers in the division last term, but they also boasted the best defensive record.

Since last season, Brugge have played six friendly matches across June and July – recording three wins, one draw and two losses.

Unfortunately, Brugge head into Saturday’s Super Cup on the back of a 4-2 defeat to Dutch side Utrecht on Tuesday.

It is worth noting that four of Brugge’s six pre-season friendlies have dished up over 2.5 goals, with Brugge netting over 1.5 goals in each of those four games.

Meanwhile, Genk have only played four pre-season friendlies since the end of the previous Pro League campaign.

They have gone undefeated during the off-season, however, picking up two victories and two draws in the process.

After beating Eendr. Termian 8-1 and seeing off Eupen 2-0, Genk recorded back-to-back 1-1 draws with two Dutch teams – Groningen and Alkmaar.

Genk secured their place in the Super Cup with a 2-1 victory over Standard Liege in the final of the 2020/21 Belgian Cup.

Head-to-head: Genk endured a five-game winless streak (one draw, four losses) against Club Brugge between 2019 and 2021 before ending that run earlier in the year.

However, Genk have since won their previous two matches against Brugge – scoring over 1.5 goals on both occasions.

Team news: Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mingolet is the only player currently on Club Brugge’s injury list.

As for Genk, they will be without central midfielder Kristian Thorstvedt on Saturday, as the 22-year-old continues to recover from a knee injury.

Given that neither side has played any competitive matches for a couple of months, Brugge and Genk are likely to produce a tight encounter on Saturday.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Brugge and Genk will play out a low-scoring draw in the 2021 Belgian Super Cup.
