The FA Cup quarter-finals are upon us this weekend, and the Championship sides, Coventry City and Leicester City, are looking to spring an upset away to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea, respectively.

Let’s take a look at more FA Cup quarter-finals upsets.

    Everton 0-3 Wigan Athletic (2013)

Although not so much of an upset in terms of the league standings, Wigan Athletic’s famous FA Cup triumph in 2012/13 earned a famous result in the quarter-finals away to Everton at Goodison Park too.

Wigan were relegated that season and became the first and only team in top flight English football history to face the drop and also win the FA Cup. However, what made this result so spectacular was how Everton were up into sixth and having one of their best seasons in Premier League history with even a finish above city rivals Liverpool to boast about.

The Latics also conceded the most goals in the Premier League that campaign with 73 let in, and in truth, this should have been a comfortable win for Everton.

    Leicester City 1, Wycombe Wanderers 2 (2001)

Wycombe Wanderers have always spent their time in the lower levels of the English football pyramid and therefore, not really had much luck in the FA Cup. In 2001, however, they got a quarter-final upset away to the Premier League's Leicester.

Lawrie Sanchez was in charge of Wycombe that day, who oddly enough, got one of the FA Cup's most famous goals when he netted the winner for Wimbledon in 1988 against Liverpool in the final. However, this game is remembered for the brilliance of Roy Essandoh.

The Belfast man got the winner that day after years of acting as a journeyman across countries like Austria and Finland, and this result for the Wanderers remains one of the biggest quarter-finals upsets ever.

    Leyton Orient 2-1 Middlesbrough (1978)

A First Division side took on a Second Division team in 1977/78 where Leyton Orient were expected to get thrashed by a solid Middlesbrough outfit. However, Orient earned a replay and took the North East outfit back to their own patch and ran out 2-1 winners to set up a semi-finals tie with Arsenal.

They did lose that semi-final matchup, but a famous win over Boro remains one of their best-ever FA Cup days.

What made this result more impressive was the current stature of Orient. The club were only in their eighth consecutive seasons out of the Third Division, and just three seasons on from this FA Cup win, they were back in the third tier and within a decade, back in the Fourth Division.
