As is customary, the Championship served up another memorable season. With the 2022-23 campaign in the books, it’s time to assess the three clubs that gained promotion to the Premier League.

Burnley won the title in eye-catching fashion, Sheffield United claimed the second automatic promotion spot, while Luton Town secure their return to top-flight action via the play-offs. Let’s take a closer look at all three teams.

    Burnley

Following six consecutive seasons in the Premier League, Burnley suffered relegation last year. However, under the guidance of Vincent Kompany, the Clarets made an immediate return to the top tier.

Remarkably, Burnley lost just three of their 46 league games in 2022-23, recording 29 wins and 14 draws along the way.

As a result, they racked up a whopping 101 points, becoming only the sixth team in Championship history to break the 100-point mark in a single season.

Kompany will be hoping that he can acquire the permanent services of Nathan Tella, who spent the title-winning campaign at Turf Moor on loan from Southampton, bagging 19 goals and five assists. Manuel Benson, Connor Roberts and Josh Brownhill also starred throughout the season.

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United are back in the big time following a two-year absence, having been relegated in 2021 after two seasons in the Premier League. Have they got what it takes to cement their place in the top flight this time around?

The Blades chalked up an impressive 91 points en route to finishing second, claiming only one victory fewer than Burnley. However, they also suffered eight defeats more than the champions, underlining the gulf between the two sides.

Since taking over as Sheff Utd’s permanent manger in November 2021, Paul Heckingbottom has overseen 48 victories in 83 games, giving him a win rate of 57.83%.

Now, the 45-year-old has the chance to take on the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp on a regular basis.

    Luton Town

In 2014, Luton Town were competing in the Conference. Thanks to four promotions in the space of 10 seasons, the Hatters find themselves back in the top tier for the first time since 1992.

Rob Edwards replaced Nathan Jones as manager back in November, and the new boss guided Luton to third before dispatching Sunderland and Coventry City in the play-offs to punch their ticket to the Premier League against the odds.

With a capacity of just 10,356, Luton’s Kenilworth Road will be the smallest stadium in the Premier League.

To say that the club has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the English football pyramid would be a colossal understatement.
