It’s the first-ever Manchester derby FA Cup final this weekend so we’ve put together a history of one of Europe’s biggest derbies.

    Origins of the Manchester Derby

It's been 142 years since the first meeting between these two clubs. United, known as Newton Heath back then, met with a City side called St Mark's. Newton Heath ran out 3-0 winners that day.

The first Football League meeting between the teams came in the 1894/95 season that saw Newton Heath win 5-2. Fast forward seven years to 1902 and both clubs had changed their names to what they are known as today.

Four years on from this came the first-ever meeting in the top tier of English football (First Division) that saw City win 3-0, and by this point, both clubs had begun to regularly witness huge attendances at their respective grounds.

    All-Time Top Scorers

The Manchester derby has been played out 189 times and seen a total of 535 goals. In this time, only three players have scored 10 or more goals in the fixture.

United’s all-time top scorer, Wayne Rooney, is the leading goalscorer in Manchester derbies after scoring 11 times and surpassing Manchester City players, Joe Hayes and Francis Lee, as both City legends have 10 each.

Eric Cantona (8) and Bobby Charlton (9) are also notable goalscorers in the derby for United, and Sergio Aguero is also the top scorer for City during the Premier League era after netting nine times.

    Historical Facts

City holds the record for the biggest wins in the Manchester derby with two 6-1 victories (1926, 2011), and the Premier League meeting this season at the Etihad saw the highest-scoring derby in a 6-3 win for City.

Phil Foden and Erling Haaland also scored hat-tricks that season; these were the first hat-tricks in a Manchester derby since Andrei Kanchelskis did so in 1994 for United.

United have won 35 derbies with City winning only 28, but after Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, United have gone on to win only nine of the 24 matches since.

The first transfers of note between the clubs came in 1906 and there have been 36 players play for both clubs at professional level with the most recent transfer between City and United being Carlos Tevez - he is also the only player to win a league title with both clubs.

Sir Matt Busby won the European Cup with United but he is the only player to play for City as a player and manage Manchester United. Mark Hughes and Steve Coppell also played many games for United and managed City.
