There can be no two ways about it now: Arsenal are in a title race out of nowhere. It seems many are scared to predict them winning it, despite the sensational record so far in the Premier League.

In fact, at this stage in the season, the Gunners have a better record than the famous Invincibles from 2003/04.

With this said, we take a look at the two sides from that triumphant year to today’s squad.

    Both Teams After Gameweek 17

Arsenal are sitting with 14 wins from 17 games in the Premier League, having only lost to Manchester United and drawn with Newcastle United and Southampton.

Mikel Arteta’s men have already won a north London derby, beaten Liverpool, drawn with the high-flying Newcastle United and even beaten Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for a second season on the spin.

With 44 points, they would be five points clear of the Invincibles if they were in the same league. In fact, Arsenal were not even top of the table after 17 games in 2003/04, trailing Manchester United by one point.

Of course, the major difference is how Arsenal did not lose a game in 2003/04, while the current Gunners side have lost once. On the other hand, a higher points tally is more impressive than an unbeaten record, in the eyes of many.

    Who Was Better?

Ultimately, this is a question for the end of the season, but after 17 games, there can be no denying that Arteta’s men have been better because they simply have more points.

As alluded to, a higher points tally is more meaningful than an unbeaten record, and given how Arsenal’s 2003/04 title-winning team drew a stunning 12 games, they finished with a points tally of 90 from the 114 available.

In fact, 12 draws is the most of any title-winning side in history, while the record of 26 goals conceded is far from the best and their 26 wins is the same record as Arsenal's title-winning year from 2001/02.

Although United put up a fight at points in the season, Arsenal also only le for a total of 27 gameweeks, with their earliest being on matchday two.

The lead at the top of the Premier League came as a result of a 4-0 hammering of Middlesbrough away from and after returning to the top a during November, it wasn’t until January 17th when Arsene Wenger’s men regained the lead at the top after United’s loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
