The Crazy Stats You May Have Missed so Far in 2023/24

2023/24 has been a wild season across Europe. Here’s the monumental statistics you may have missed.

Sheffield United Set for Worst-Ever Premier League Defensive Record

Sheffield United have seemingly had one foot back in the Championship since practically the beginning of their start to life back in the Premier League in 2023/24.

Right now, the Blades sit down in last place in England’s top flight, and with a gap of 11 points on the safe spot of 17th, the club could end up being relegated within the next few weeks, should results go against them because there is only 33 points left to play for.

Worse yet, Sheffield United are likely set to put on record the worst defensive record in Premier League history after Derby County’s tally of 88 back in 2007/08. Derby broke countless records that year, and although Sheffield United have gone two better than the Rams’ overall points tally of 11, the Yorkshire side have already let in 27 goals.

With 11 games left to play, they need to avoid letting in at least 17 goals. However, with a record-breaking five games at home seeing them concede at least five in one game, they are all but guaranteed to break Derby’s record.

Leverkusen’s New Unbeaten Record as a German Top Flight Team

What a stunning season it has been for Bayer Leverkusen. Heading into gameweek 25 of the Bundesliga, they remain unbeaten and are also into the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal and round of 16 of the Europa League.

This now sees Xabi Alonso’s men on a record of 34 games, 30 wins and no losses across all competitions, breaking the previous unbeaten record of 32 already. What’s more, with both games against Bayern Munich played and a meeting with 2. Bundesliga’s Düsseldorf in the DFB-Pokal, there’s a serious chance they do the league and cup double and go all 40 domestic games unbeaten.

There are also still a potential seven more to play in Europe, potentially taking Leverkusen’s tally to 47 unbeaten.

Napoli Set for Worst Serie A Title Defence This Century

Technically speaking, the worst-ever title defence in Serie A history goes to Juventus back in 2005/06 when they were relegated to Serie B as a result of being disqualified that year due to their involvement in Calciopoli. However, Juventus did finish first by a margin of 15 points, but were disqualified in the end and moved to last pla.

AC Milan did finish fourth last season in their defence, but even Roma in 2001/02 finished runners-up to Juventus after winning the title the year before, while Lazio finished third in 2000/01 after triumphing in 1999/00.

Simply put, with a spot in seventh right now, Napoli are set to hand in the worst title defence in Serie A since Sampdoria finished sixth and 18 points behind Milan in 1991/92.
