Liverpool have added two attacking midfielders to their squad this summer.

The signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion was a great piece of business and the Argentine should have little trouble settling into his role at Anfield.

The addition of Dominik Szoboszlai came as a bit more of a shock and it will be interesting to see how the Hungarian international performs in his first season in English football.

Despite the additions of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, for close to £100 million, there is some concern among Liverpool fans as we enter August regarding central midfield.

Jordan Henderson has been sold to Al-Ettifaq and it appears Fabinho is going to follow the England international to Saudi Arabia.

Naby Keïta has left on a free transfer to Werder Bremen and although the midfielder could never hold down a regular place in the Liverpool team, it is another central midfielder leaving the club.

James Milner has left Liverpool on a free transfer and there have been rumours Thiago could also leave Anfield this summer.

With so many central midfielders leaving Liverpool this summer, Jurgen Klopp needs to add to his squad before the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign.

Should Fabinho move to Saudi Arabia, it will leave Klopp with Stefan Bajcetic, Curtis Jones, and Thiago as his classic central midfield options.

Trent Alexander-Arnold could operate in central midfield but he is not proven in that position and without at least one quality holding midfield player in the squad, Liverpool are going to be in for a tough campaign.

Klopp has spoken about the situation and says the club are working on solutions for central midfield.

Romeo Lavia of Southampton is one player who has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool this summer.

Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season and the 19-year-old is keen to return to the English topflight this season.

There is no doubting the potential of Lavia and he played 29 times for Southampton in the Premier League last season.

There were some impressive performances but there is still some way to go in the development of Lavia before he becomes a top Premier League player.

Can Liverpool afford to take a risk on such a young player to replace Fabinho in what is a crucial position?

Other players have been linked with a move to Anfield this summer, including Gabri Veiga, Ryan Gravenberch, Khephren Thuram, and Manu Kone.

However, there appears to be little movement for any of those players. It is worth noting that Klopp has signed players in September, with Diogo Jota and Thiago being two examples.

Nonetheless, Liverpool fans will want to see additions to the central midfield as quickly as possible with the first fixture of the Premier League season on the 13th of August.
