An opening day 1-1 draw against Inter Miami was followed by a 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes. The Galaxy then drew back-to-back games against Nashville and St. Louis City.
LA’s matches have been full of goals. All four fixtures saw both teams score. Each of the Galaxy’s last three fixtures finished with over 2.5 goals scored.
For Sporting KC, there have been fewer goals scored this season. Sporting began the campaign by drawing three consecutive matches: 1-1 with Houston Dynamo, 1-1 with Philadelphia Union, and nil-nil with Los Angeles FC.
Round No. 4 saw Sporting KC get their first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over the hapless Earthquakes. Just four goals were scored by Sporting in the opening four games. The defence conceded three times.
Sporting’s lone win came at home. There, they took four points from the opening two matches, outsourcing opponents 3-2.
The Galaxy picked up four points from six on the road. They outscored their opponents 5-3. Although neither club is setting the MLS’s Western Conference on fire, this will be a match-up of two mid-table sides that do not lose.
Sporting have a great head-to-head record against LA Galaxy over the course of their last six meetings. The Sky Blues won three and drew three of those six outings.
The trend between these clubs, however, is draws. The last three matches between Sporting KC and LA Galaxy stalemates. Last season, the clubs drew nil-nil at Sporting’s Children’s Mercy Park.
Galaxy forward Dejan Joveljic leads the team in scoring with four goals. Riqui Puig has two goals this season. American midfielder Marky Delgado has been the team’s chief creator, with three assists.
Sporting have had goal scoring by committee. Four different players have scored Sporting’s four goals this season.
The Sky Blues are not big spenders like LA Galaxy, but manager Peter Vermes is getting a lot out of the squad currently.
