A mixed set of emotions for Leicester fans

This season has been a strange one for Leicester City fans. For much of the campaign, they were coasting to a place in next season’s Champions League.

They even managed to win the FA Cup for the first time by recording a 1-0 win over Chelsea in the final.

All the Foxes had to do to secure a place in the Champions League for next season was to beat managerless Tottenham on Sunday at the King Power Stadium.

However, unfortunately for Brendan Rodgers’ team, they slipped up, just as they did last season falling at the final hurdle by suffering a 4-2 defeat.

The loss was enough for them to drop down to fifth place in the table and into the Europa League for next season. The defeat against Spurs will feel like a major disappointment for the team from the Midlands.

There will be happiness at the cup victory and the way the team has played at times this season. However, there is no way of getting around the fact that Leicester City have missed a big opportunity this season to play in Europe’s elite competition next season.

Of course, they will be back next season challenging for a top-four spot. However, by then the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and even Arsenal may have improved their squads. Sustaining a top-four spot is a massive task, as the Foxes have found out to their detriment in recent seasons.

There is no doubt that Rodgers has done a stellar job at the Midlands club. Taking the next step of finishing in the top four of the Premier League has narrowly eluded them. Some may be questioning whether Leicester can make that next step next season with so much competition.

Their title triumph in 2016 was a one-off, but in recent years the Foxes have established themselves as a very good top-flight team. Unfortunately, this season has brought a mixed bag of emotions for the Midlander’s.
