Robert Lewandowski miles ahead of rivals in goalscoring stakes

Last season was an incredible one for Bayern Munich and star striker Robert Lewandowski. The Bavarians become European champions and the Polish international’s goals were at the heart of their success.

On Wednesday night, the forward was once again key for his team as he scored in the Bavarians 2-1 home win over Lazio which saw them cruise into the quarter-finals of the competition.

The goal means that Lewandowski has been involved in 25 goals in the Champions League since the start of last season, having scored 20 goals and produced five assists. No player has contributed more in Europe’s elite competition that timeframe.

The experienced forward scored 49 times in the Bundesliga and Champions League last season, with time still left this season, Lewandowski has already scored 32 league goals and five in the Champions League.

There is no forward in the main European leagues that can match Lewandowski for goals in recent seasons. Even legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who were once accustomed to hitting an extraordinary amount of goals are trailing in the Bayern Munich forward’s wake.

The pair may be getting older, but they still have stellar league goal tallies of 23 and 21 at Juventus and Barcelona respectively this season.

Robert Lewandowski has been prolific for the best part of a decade. It started at Dortmund before he crossed the bitter divide to rivals Bayern.

He has seemingly always been deadly in front of goal. However, the veteran forward seems to be maturing like fine wine, as the last two seasons of his career have been his most prolific.

There is still time for Robert Lewandowski to add to his burgeoning goal tally. His scoring record is nearly on par with the likes of Ronaldo and Messi in their prime.

That is certainly good company to keep, as the Polish goal machine continues to destroy defences.
