Is Julian Nagelsmann a realistic summer target for Tottenham?

According to the Daily Telegraph, Tottenham have placed RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann at the top of their managerial wishlist if they dispense with the services of Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham have been in poor form of late, as the team from north London have now lost six of their last seven matches in the domestic game, exiting the FA Cup in the process. Mourinho was brought in to win trophies.

They are in the League Cup final that has been rescheduled until May, while they are also in the last-32 of the Europa League. So, there is still an opportunity to deliver silverware this season.

However, there is now a feeling that Mourinho is living on borrowed time at the Spurs. One of the Portuguese bosses’ most recent press conferences was highly negative and almost sounded like he was about to walk away from the job.

If results keep going against the team he won’t have to walk away, he could be removed as Tottenham boss.

If Mourinho does depart, then Nagelsmann would be a logical appointment. The 33-year-old is one of the most highly regarded coaches in the European game. He has turned RB Leipzig into genuine title contenders in the Bundesliga while showing tremendous tactical acumen.

The youngster in managerial terms has previously been linked with the Spurs job, before Mourinho’s appointment, as well as the Chelsea job after Frank Lampard’s departure.

He is the sort of forward-thinking head coach that would be welcomed by Tottenham fans, who have not universally embraced Mourinho as their coach.

Reports in the European media suggest that the German boss would be interested in making the move to the Premier League this summer.

If Tottenham did manage to appoint Nagelsmann, then it could just be one of the most shrewd managerial appointments of recent times in the English top-flight.
