On Wednesday night, Everton and Leicester shared a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park in a highly intriguing game. The Toffees took the lead in the first-half through James Rodriguez and after an improved second-half display the Foxes equalised through a Youri Tielemans strike.
In the end, arguably a draw was a fair result. However, the home side may have taken all three points if it would not have been for another error from England number one Jordan Pickford for the equaliser.
The former Sunderland goalkeeper is capable of producing world-class saves, but he is also erratic and is prone to errors like the one that cost his team two points on Wednesday night.
The Toffees were without their two first-choice central midfielders Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, so would have been satisfied to be a goal up until the equaliser. However, the mistake changed three points to one and Evertonian’s will be frustrated by another mistake from Pickford, who continues to test their patience and faith.
Pickford has been in and out of the starting line-up this season, with Swedish number one Robin Olsen also featuring in several games. Supposedly the signing of Olsen was to put pressure on Pickford to improve. However, the 26-year-old’s development as a player seems to be stunted.
He is still making the same mistakes he did earlier in his career and it is costing Everton. England head coach Gareth Southgate was at Goodison Park on Wednesday night and he will certainly not have been impressed. With Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope in solid form this season, Pickford should be looking over his shoulder nervously.
As for Everton, head coach Carlo Ancelotti is highly experienced and will know how to handle the situation. However, it would not be majorly surprising if Olsen sees more game time over the next few months.
