Chelsea were declared winners of the last transfer window by many. The Blues brought in Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva.

On paper, most of the signings looked like decent ones. However, unfortunately for the Blues, signing a plethora of players does not always add up to success.

The signings seemed to strengthen their already strong squad. However, things are not all rosy in the Chelsea garden at the minute.

In fact, a 3-1 home defeat by Manchester City on Sunday means that Frank Lampard’s team are eighth-place in the table, seven points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in-hand.

Looking at the current situation it seems that Chelsea may not be the title challengers this season that many believed they would be.

The team from south west London have spent a lot of money, only to regress as a team. A run of one win and four defeats in the Blues last six top-flight games has put the club legend under major pressure.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is not known for his patience when it comes to head coaches. Last season was almost a free hit fit for Lampard, as the club were not allowed to make transfers last summer, so there was less pressure to deliver. This season was always going to be the litmus test of Lampard as a top-level boss.

The club has heavily backed Lampard in the transfer market. Whether all the players that arrived this summer was his choice is a different discussion, but the former Derby boss will have chosen some of the new arrivals. It is his job to get the best out of the players at his disposal. The eye test proves that has not been happening in recent games.

Lampard is a hero at Chelsea, but he is also a rookie boss and his status within the club may mean absolutely nothing if the results continue in a similar vein.
