On Tuesday night, Manchester City hosted West Brom at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League. The Citizens were heavy favourites to win.

Pep Guardiola’s team had a big opportunity to make up ground on the teams at the top of the table.

Instead, the Baggies held City to a 1-1 draw. Some will say that West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone made six saves and the visitors defended bravely. However, in seasons gone by City would still have found a way through and won the game.

The men from Manchester looked to be getting back to form in recent games, but Tuesday’s result showed that there is still something missing for the Citizens.

It will be these sorts of results against relegation-threatened teams that will likely cost City at the end of the season.

Even though reigning champions Liverpool have been inconsistent this season, so are City and just about every other team in the top-flight. This weekend was a typical example, as top-two Spurs and Liverpool drew with teams that they would expect to beat.

The title-winning City sides would have hammered West Brom, even if Johnstone had pulled off six saves and the Baggies defended for their lives.

The Citizens attacking players were just not clever enough to break down the worst defence in the Premier League.

Guardiola recently signed a deal with the club, so he must be relatively confident that he can still turn things around in the near future.

However, the Catalan boss needs to help his team rediscover the mojo that made them such a top team in their two title-winning campaign.

The defensive part of their game has improved immensely of late. If City can find their attacking verve then they can still recover to mount a realistic title challenge. However, they cannot afford many more results like Tuesday nights.
