Win at Tottenham could be a big moment for Everton

The first weekend of the Premier League had several talking points. However, one of the games that looked set to be the highlight of gameweek one was Tottenham’s home game with Everton.

The game produced a superbly gritted 1-0 win for Carlo Ancelotti’s team. The Toffees new trio of James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure all made impressive debuts.

James shone brightly in the first half, as he looked a major attacking threat every time he had the ball. Despite looking slightly rusty later on in the game after having no pre-season, he looked more like the James of 2014 than the frustrated figure who rarely figured for Real Madrid last season.

If James provided the flair, Allan provided the grit, as he lived up to his reputation as an ace ball-winner in the centre of midfield.

The Brazilian provided the team with the sort of defensive base that was sadly lacking last season. Not only did the former Napoli star provide defensive solidity in the centre of the park, but he also provided his leadership skills.

Doucoure looked highly comfortable in the midfield and looks to have already developed an understanding with his teammates. The French midfielder produced a particularly vital tackle on Lucas Moura with the Spurs forward seemingly through on goal.

Tottenham were poor and it may have only been gameweek one, but the victory could be seen as a big statement for the visitors. The result saw Everton win at a so-called ‘big six’ club for the first time in 41 games.

The Merseysider’s are a big club, who have for too long underwhelmed in the Premier League. In fact, last season was their worse top-flight campaign in 16 years.

Carlo Ancelotti knew what he needed in the transfer window and seems to have brought that in. The signs are positive so far for the Toffees, who could finally be ready to mount a realistic top-six challenge.
