    The 2019/20 Premier League season only finished in late July, but the new campaign is just around the corner. And you know what that means!? There is a brand-new Fantasy Premier League season on the horizon.

    To help you prepare for the upcoming Fantasy Football season, why not check out this FPL guide? It covers last year’s top performers in each position, new signings to look out for and also in-form players from the end of 2019/20.

    Who were last season’s top point scorers in each position?

    Let’s begin by taking a look at the top five players in each position from last season. This will give us an idea of who to include in our team from the off.

    Goalkeepers

    • Nick Pope (Burnley) – 170
    • Dean Henderson (Sheffield United) – 160
    • Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City) – 156
    • Rui Patricio (Wolverhampton Wanderers) – 153
    • David de Gea (Manchester United) – 143

    Interestingly, neither of the top two’s goalkeepers – Alisson (Liverpool) and Ederson (Manchester City) – made it into the top five. Ederson won the Golden Glove with 17 clean sheets, while Alisson and Nick Pope tied for second place with 15 shutouts.

    Wolves’ Rui Patricio saved two of the three penalties he faced last season. Foxes number one Kasper Schmeichel also saved two penalties, although he did face ten.

    Dean Henderson was immense for Sheff Utd last term, but the English youngster has returned to parent club Man Utd to fight for his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI. Both of the Red Devils’ current goalkeepers finished in the top five in 2019/20.

    Defenders

    • Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) – 210
    • Andrew Robertston (Liverpool) – 181
    • Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) – 178
    • Matt Doherty (Wolverhampton Wanderers) – 167
    • James Tarkowski (Burnley) – 143

    It is no surprise that Liverpool dominate this category. The Reds conceded just 33 goals on their way to winning the title, while their defenders chipped in with plenty of goals and assists along the way.

    Alexander-Arnold (4 goals/13 assists), Robertson (2 goals/12 assists) and van Dijk (5 goals/1 assist) all made a huge impact at both ends of the pitch last season, with Alexander-Arnold and van Dijk featuring in every Premier League game in 2019/20.

    It’s worth pointing out that Sheff Utd trio Edna Stevens (142), George Baldock (142) and John Egan (133) narrowly missed out on the top five. Chris Wilder’s backline was extremely solid last term, and the Blades finished with the fourth-best defensive record in the division.

    Midfielders

    • Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) – 251
    • Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – 233
    • Sadio Mane (Liverpool) – 221
    • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal) – 205
    • Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) – 204

    Kevin De Bruyne was the highest scorer in last season’s FPL. The Man City wizard racked up 33 goal involvements last term (13 goals/20 assists), although Mohamed Salah wasn’t too far behind with 29 (19 goals/10 assists).

    Sadio Mane contributed 18 goals and 9 assists for Liverpool, while Aubameyang finished as the runner-up to Jamie Vardy in the Golden Boot race after netting 22 goals.

    Following on from a remarkable 2018/19 campaign (17 goals/12 assists), Raheem Sterling enjoyed another outstanding season on a personal level, notching up 20 goals and 4 assists in 33 Premier League appearances last season.

    Forwards

    • Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) – 210
    • Anthony Martial (Manchester United) – 200
    • Danny Ings (Southampton) – 198
    • Raul Jimenez (Wolverhampton Wanderers) – 194
    • Richarlison (Everton) – 165

    Jamie Vardy clinched the Golden Boot, finishing one goal clear of Danny Ings and Aubameyang. Anthony Martial hit the ground running after the coronavirus lay-off, bagging 6 goals and 4 assists in the final 8 games of the season.

    Raul Jimenez and Richarlison shone for Wolves and Everton respectively. Jimenez finished with 17 goals and 6 assists, with Richarlison racking up 13 goals and 3 assists.

    Who are the new players to look out for?

    Chelsea’s new signings will undoubtedly attract a lot of interest from Fantasy Football managers this season. Timo Werner, Hakim Yiyech and Thiago Silva are all excellent options, while Ben Chilwell is likely to get plenty of game time following his move from Leicester.

    Excting young winger Ferran Torres has joined Man City from Valencia, Leeds have signed Rodrigo from the same club, and Eberechi Eze looks set to make an immediate impact at Crystal Palace after recording 14 goals and 8 assists in the Championship for QPR last term.

    Highly-rated centre-back Robin Koch has joined Leeds from Freiburg, with the German brought in as a direct replacement for the departed Ben White, who looks set to play a key role for Brighton this season following a hugely succesful loan spell at Elland Road.

    Who finished last season in eye-catching form?

    It is important to remember that there is only a very short break between seasons this year. Therefore, players who were in form at the end of the last term are more likely to pick up where they left off.

    Martial has already been mentioned, but his Man Utd teammates Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood all ended 2019/20 in style. Fernandes registered 6 goals and 4 assists after the restart, Rashford hit 3 goals and 3 assists during the same period, and Greenwood notched 5 goals and 1 assist following the resumption.

    West Ham’s Michail Antonio was arguably the surprise package towards the end of last season. The versatile Hammer bagged 8 goals and 1 assist when the campaign got back underway and almost singlehandedly saved his club from relegation.
